The Basics of Roulette
Roulette is a casino game that involves betting on the outcome of a spinning wheel. It’s one of the most popular gambling games around, offering glamour and mystery for players. It’s easy to learn and offers a surprising level of depth for serious gamblers.
A roulette table carries a placard that describes the minimum and maximum bet types. The house edge for inside bets is higher than for outside bets, but payouts are usually much higher too. Choose a table within your budget and be sure to understand the odds of each bet type before laying your chips.
The roulette wheel consists of a solid wooden disk slightly convex in shape. Its rim is lined with metal separators, or frets, that are painted alternately red and black, with the compartments (known as canoes by croupiers) numbered from 1 to 36. A 37th compartment, painted green, carries the number 0. On American wheels there are also two additional green spaces marked 00.
After the dealer clears the table of winning bets, players can place their own chips on the desired numbers or sections. The croupier then spins the wheel and rolls a small ball into it, around a tilted circular track that runs around the center of the roulette table. The ball lands in one of the slots on the wheel, and winners are awarded according to their bets.
The simplest way to play is to start with “outside bets,” which are placed on groups of numbers rather than individual digits. They are cheaper and have a better chance of hitting than inside bets. Avoid grandiose or complicated strategies, and remember that this is a game of luck. If you win, cash in your winnings as soon as possible. Otherwise, you will risk spending more than you can afford to lose.
