The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize is sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited. The Prize is established by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation and title sponsored by BOCHK in order to recognise outstanding scientists who have made contributions in scientific research and influence on transformation of R&D outcomes in Hong Kong, thereby contributing to the advancement of science and society globally.
This year’s theme for the award is Our Changing World, inviting applicants to explore global evolution – socially, culturally, economically and technologically – through various art mediums. Winners will be honored at an awards ceremony in Hong Kong and gain access to the city’s premier research facilities – making this one of Asia’s premiere prizes that could open doors of opportunity.
Aside from the monetary prize of HK$100,000, winners will also receive a certificate and an opportunity to present their work at a local exhibition. This is to further promote the importance of science and technology in Hong Kong’s economy.
In the past, the hongkong prize has been awarded to a number of people from Hong Kong including a young man using technology to assist homeless individuals and an artist reinterpreting human rights concepts through fine art concepts. The HK prize is an ideal way to showcase the city’s talent while encouraging its residents to pursue their passions.
Among the many innovations that were awarded at this year’s HK Innovation and Technology Expo was a firm-to-soft intelligent floor mat for elderly fall prevention, an ultra-stable lithium metal battery with 3D nanostructured anode, and a flexible circuit board with high-speed transmission performance. These inventions are examples of Hong Kong’s ability to translate scientific knowledge into real-life applications and benefits for its citizens.
This is the fourth year of this international competition which was established in 2013 to encourage and reward secondary school students for creativity and innovation. Participating students must be nominated by their teachers and can submit a maximum of three entries online. The winning innovations are chosen by a panel of judges and will be rewarded with a cash prize of HK$8,000 for the student, and HK$20,000 to the school of the Judges Prize winner.
