Each year the Hillman Foundation awards monetary prizes in several categories to writers who illuminate the great issues of our time-from the search for a basis for lasting peace to the need for better housing, medical care and employment security for all, to the promotion of civil liberties and democracy, the battle against discrimination based on race, nationality or religion. The Foundation began awarding its prizes in 1950 and has honored contributors to the daily, periodical and labor press as well as authors and radio journalists. The Foundation also has given a number of large grants for the study of mental illness and has made extensive investments in the fields of art and music.

In addition to recognizing excellence in journalism, the Hillman Foundation also has supported research into a variety of other subjects and areas. It has helped fund a variety of educational and cultural institutions, and it has supported the establishment of lecture series on college campuses. The Hillman Foundation has also given tens of thousands of dollars to support scholarships for students.
