The Sidney Prize and the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize

The Sidney prize is awarded monthly to an outstanding piece of socially conscious journalism. The submission deadline is the last day of each month. The work may be published online or in print. Whether an author is writing on a daily or periodical newspaper, magazine, photojournalism, or the web, we look for pieces that illuminate the great issues of our time: from the search for peace, to the need for better housing and medical care for everyone, the struggle for civil liberties, democracy and the fight against discrimination on the basis of race, nationality or religion.

The scholarship, which is named in honor of the late labor leader, Sidney Hillman, has been awarded since 1950. It has honored writers, journalists and public figures who pursue investigative reporting and public policy in service to the common good.

Since its inception, the Foundation has given tens of thousands of dollars to students who pursue research and study in the fields of economics, history, labor and political science. These scholars demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of Hillman, who sought to build a vibrant union movement that extended beyond the shop floor and into all aspects of working people’s lives.

In the spirit of our founder’s commitment to honoring and supporting those who are fighting for social justice, the Hillman Foundation is proud to offer this prize for a PhD student in sociology. The scholarship is valued at $16,000, and the winner will be able to choose one course of studies to be taken in the next two years of their degree program, focusing on a topic relevant to social justice.

The 2024 Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize, supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation and named in memory of Overland contributor Neilma Gantner, seeks outstanding original short fiction themed loosely around the notion of ‘travel’. Imaginative, creative and literary interpretations are strongly encouraged. The judges (Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh) have chosen a shortlist of eight, and will be announcing a winner and the runners-up on Wednesday, 29 November.
