Getting the right data for SGP analyses requires careful preparation. The most important task is converting the data to the right format. This can be done by hand or with a program, but it is much easier to use a pre-formatted data set like the one provided by SGPdata. This data set is available in both the wide and long formats, but the higher-level SGP functions all assume the long format. The first column, ID, provides the unique student identifier; the next five columns, GRADE_2013, GRADE_2014, GRADE_2015, and GRADE_2016, provide the assessment scores associated with the student over the past 5 years; and the last five columns, SS_2013, SS_2014, SS_2015, and SS_2016, are the scale scores for each of the 5 assessments. This file is a great way to get started with SGPs, although it is worth exploring the other options in this vignette as well.
